EOCDF (Eastern Obolo Community Development Foundation) works to support traditional fishing communities in a resource-rich environment.

Village Aid began working in South-east Nigeria in 2007, supporting the Abanbeke Development Association (ADA) to tackle severe social exclusion experienced by vulnerable adults and children in rural communities. ADA provides micro-credit and agricultural training services to families suffering severe poverty from 18 communities in Obudu, Cross River State. ADA also works with traditional authorities to lobby on behalf of women’s rights for more effective implementation of national law.
Eastern Obolo is an oil-producing community in Akwa Ibom state, and regarded by the UN as one of the poorest local government areas in the country. The Eastern Obolo Community Development Foundation (EOCDF) has been supporting traditional fishing communities to engage more effectively with oil companies and government agencies to tackle the enduring consequences of the socially destructive interplay of abundant oil resources and systemic corruption.
Country facts & figures
Nigeria has a poor international reputation, and is feared amongst its neighbours across West Africa. Many local people are patient, hospitable, and keen to overcome the poor reputation, which they say is not indicative of the country as a whole. The country is incredibly wealthy in terms of natural resources, but has never had the robust governmental institutions required to manage them effectively. However, things are slowly improving. The federal government has made a significant impact on basic infrastructure and the economy is growing fast. However, chronic corruption remains firmly rooted in state and local government agencies.
