Increasing Employment Through Economic Literacy
In Eastern Ghana, there are a lack of employment oportunities for young people. Youth are forced to migrate to urban areas in search of menial jobs such as bag carriers at the markets.
They earn very little from this and are exposed to various forms of exploitation. Many girls become pregnant and they have to survive on their small earnings with their babies.
Migrants have nothing to return home to. Recognising this need, YOWE developed a skills and enterprise project aimed at training youth in employable skills to be able to generate and retain an income for themselves. They have trained people in bee keeping, tailoring, agriculture, trading and teaching. As well as gainign vocational skills, young people learn to count and keep track of their money. They undergo business management and record keeping training to ensure a secure livelihood for their futures. This has given young people the opportunity to return home and become valuable resource people within their communities.
