World Class Act - Engaging school children with global issues

‘World Class Act’ is Village Aid’s project (funded by the Department for International Development) that uses drama to engage young people with global issues.

What are we hoping to do?

The overarching aim of the project is to raise awareness and understanding of, and empathy towards, the issues of world poverty. Young people are to be empowered through the use of drama to be active change-makers and campaigners for global poverty reduction into adult life.

How will we do this?

By working with schools and youth groups around Derbyshire offering drama packages for curricular and extra-curricular activities. We will also produce a Teacher Resource pack and a special World Class Act website that will allow young people to engage in global issues.

Examples of World Class Act projects so far

Buxton Community School: All Year 7 pupils received our drama workshop ‘Adila goes to School’ examining the right to education. Pupils joined our after-school drama group to explore issues of poverty in more depth and worked towards creating their own social dramas on Health and Education to perform in front of the rest of the year group.

Tibshelf Community School: Working with two Y10 Citizenship groups, Helen devised and delivered a six week scheme of work on Global Gender Issues using drama and participatory methods.

What the pupils have to say about World Class Act:

“We could talk about recent and ongoing global issues”

“[it made me think about] … how lucky I am to be able to experience all the great things in this country. How  I/we can help prevent poverty, diseases, discrimination”

“We were active and we will remember it”

“We weren’t just writing all the time, sometimes it’s better learning in a fun way.”
