MBOSCUDA in Cameroon

MBOSCUDA - Mbororo Social and Cultural Development Association - delivers REFLECT literacy, para-legal and agro-pastoralist services to rural communities in Cameroon.

Map of Cameroon

Traditional Mbororo society suffers severe persecution at the hands of the state institutions and is badly equipped to cope with the rapid pace of change which is affecting the whole of Africa. MBOSCUDA and Village Aid work in remote mountain communities, helping to integrate Mbororo people into wider society, whilst supporting the development of local institutions which defend local interests and drive local development efforts.

In North West Cameroon, there are high rates of illiteracy, limited education facilities, with girls in particular being denied an education and many people are victims of human rights violations. Village Aid works in Cameroon with MBOSCUDA, based in Bamenda, North West Cameroon. We work in 30 villages to help the poorest and most disadvantaged gain sustainable livelihoods. Village Aid supports projects which address human rights, gender, agro-pastoral development and access to justice.

MBOSCUDA ensures that more women are educated, enabling them to contribute to their household income and their children's education. Reflect sessions address issues such as pasture improvement, tree planting and conflict management. MBOSCUDA hold many training workshops for beneficiaries, including training on leadership, sheep production and gender sensitivity.

MBOSCUDA has set up a human rights database to monitor the violations in the area. They have created more awareness about basic human rights which has greatly reduced the number of violations in North West Cameroon.

In 2008 MBOSCUDA helped the following with support from a grant given by Comic Relief

  • 679 women and girls learnt reading and writing skills
  • 480 young women received business management training and received loans
  • 135 men and women were counselled on human rights abuses
  • 4383 women and youth were educated in conflict management, HIV/AIDS and the rights of the child
