Country facts & figures

Ghana was the first modern African country to retrieve its independence in 1957, and is now widely regarded as a beacon of democracy in the West African sub-region. Lake Volta was created by president Kwame Nkrumah in 1966 to feed the turbines of the Akosombo dam. This investment provided a stable source of clean electricity for development, but displaced thousands of people in doing so.

Ghana’s economy is developing quickly, with many diaspora Africans returning from abroad to invest. Off-shore oil was recently discovered. Ghanaian democratic institutions should have the capacity and experience to manage this resource effectively for the benefit of the whole nation.
