Map of Ghana

Village Aid works in Eastern Ghana with Youth and Women Empowerment Organisation to provide literacy, credit and agricultural development services to over 800 vulnerable young people.

In Northern Ghana we work with Simli Aid and have helped over 60 communities in 5 districts. Our work there includes, assisting marginalised women to secure their rights, support livelihood activities and enable people to have access to basic social services.

Eastern Ghana

In Eastern Ghana there are low levels of literacy, especially amongst youth and women. There is hardly any income generating activities, which has led to many young people leaving for bigger cities in search of work. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the area is 12%, making it the highest in the country.

Reflect circle members learn about issues such as domestic violence, disability and migration, which directly affect them. YOWE engages people in enterprising activities such as bee-keeping and honey production. 550 people currently benefit from loans provided by YOWE. The sustainable livelihoods programme has enabled people to provide for their households and send their children to school. YOWE also carry out advocacy campaigns on HIV/AIDS, promoting safe sex, especially amongst youth and commuter groups such as truck drivers.

Northern Ghana

In Northern Ghana, an estimated 70% of the population lives in poverty. Employment opportunities are scarce and people have limited access to water, education and health services. About 40% of the children do not go to school, most of whom are girls. Many people rely on agriculture, but they lack the capital, farming technology, skills and resources to grow enough food.

Simli works with over 60 communities, delivering programmes in education, access to justice and agriculture. Simli also use social drama and graphics to create awareness about pertinent issues. Through this, Simli has been able to develop campaigns, highlighting issues such as child migration, access to health care and the importance of the girl child education

Employment opportunities have been provided to young people so that they can stay in their communities through sustainable livelihood programmes. Agricultural professionals have equipped communities with techniques such as crop rotation and composting which has prevented soil erosion and increased soil production and fertility.
