Ghana's honey rush

Mr Teye Domerty, Bee-keeper

Mr Teye Domertey is 34 years old. He lives at a small farming community called Ayermersu in the Lower Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region of the Republic of Ghana with his wife and four young children.

Teye has been a food crop farmer for over eighteen years. He joined YOWE’s (Youth and Women’s Empowerment Organisation) REFLECT circle as a participant in 2006 and received a series of training workshops including ‘good bee-keeping’.

Teye quickly emerged as a natural leader of the group and now manages a number of bee hives supplied by YOWE. Teye himself has constructed eight bee hives of his own. In 2010, he harvested 18 gallons of honey, earning £608 from the proceeds.

“The money I got from the honey I sold enabled me to register my family with the national health insurance scheme this year. I’ve also been able to enrol my children in a good school in Odumase because for the first time in my life I can afford it. I gave my wife a sum of £150 to begin trading at Agormanya market. This year, I will construct six new hives to expand my bee keeping business. It is very exciting”.
