Global Citizenship - Curriculum support

Village Aid has produced an excellent resource for primary school teachers introducing the global dimension to the curriculum whilst stimulating thought, discussion and debate about our place in the world.

Sue Walker, one of Village Aid’s volunteers, produced the teaching pack having identified an ideal opportunity to forge links between children in Derbyshire and their peers in West Africa.

Teachers have found the resource to be interesting and stimulating. The pack is aimed at Key Stage 2 children and contains a wide variety of material including games, pictures, discussion opportunities, practical activities and stories. Whilst it is intended that the lessons be followed through in sequence, each lesson can be used as one-off sessions.

Children in West Africa provided most of the information in the pack with the idea being that the response from pupils in Derbyshire will form the basis of a similar resource for children in Africa. In this way it is a genuine exchange of experiences in our “Shared World”. By working through the pack we hope that children will learn about the issues facing children in rural West Africa and appreciate their positive energy and resourcefulness.

The pack is available to purchase at cost price, £20.00 plus postage and packaging which includes the ‘Children Talking’ CD of photos. Anyone interested in receiving a copy for their school should get in touch.

Village Aid has a box of African children’s artefacts to accompany this pack, which can be borrowed at a nominal charge.
