Over the hills and far away - Summer school 2007

“We made a play about slavery in Africa and it helped me understand that it was a serious issue what people had to deal with. I would like other children everywhere to know about this issue because it is important. We went and showed it to hundreds of people in a huge hall, it was so exciting.” Y8 participant.

This is just one participant’s recollection of her experience on the 2007 Village Aid Summer School that took place at Highfields school. Thanks to funding from the Peak District National Park Authority, Derbyshire young people were able to take part in an exciting and dynamic week of drama based activities whilst looking at challenging issues.

Helen was joined in July by Josephine Sackey from Ghana, to run the summer school programme called ‘Over the Hills … and Far Away’. Students from Matlock were among those who learned to express themselves through social drama and role play. Whilst learning about the lives of African children today and during the slave trade, summer school participants made links with young mill workers in the Derbyshire textile industry in the 18th and 19th centuries to create three short films examining slavery and child exploitation in both historical and contemporary times.
